We have a new Panasonic TX-L37S10 on rental with 10 days to change our mind and swop for the plasma TX-P42 S10. if we want to, though this costs more. The reason I am considering this is because when I watch things like Planet Earth on Sky (not in HD), the picture isn't great. As the camera pans over green forest scenes, the green areas seem to "sparkle" and "shimmer" as though flickering, it does this on expanses of grey rocks too. Otherwise the picture is ok. I don't subscrible to HD, and probably won't for some time yet, so the improved quality I know I would have with HD is not my concern. As we have just upgraded from an old Panasonic we had for 15 years, I am disappointed that this new LCD one doesn't seem as great for this type of TV program as the old monster!

I know the plasma will be 42 inches and not 37, but would the Plasma version picture be better for regular non HD viewing?

We don't use games on the TV or look at photos etc, just the odd DVD. and the hire shop has told me that if I change from the Contrast (Dynamic) 50,000:1 of the LCD to the 30,000:1 Native I am going to lower standard TV, yet the Dynamic is 2,000,000:1 so isn't that better?

Any help greatly appreciated, as we need to make decision soon!

Personally, I think for standard definition video, plasmas are usually better than LCDs.

The contrast ratio is a way of measuring the difference between black and white, and is generally meaningless because manufacturers use ludicrous measuring techniques.

If you want to know what I'd do - I'd get the plasma.

Just bought the p42s10 and watched last night's footy on freeview, I was pleasantly surprised at the lack of artifacts etc, I had been lead to believe that there would be lots of smearing etc.

I looked at LCD vs Plasma and decided plasma was the way forwards and I wanted 1080p for future proofing and also PC output.

FWIW I got a good deal at Richer Sounds on it they will price match any online retailer as long as it includes delivery and 5 years warranty, it also looks like the warranty is better than the panasonic one too, even if its only because its at home rather than RTB

The rental company very kindly came down with the plasma one, in the 42, and we didn't think it was as good as the LCD, the pictures looked blurred. So we have stuck with the LCD ! But thanks for your help.

To be honest, neither are as good as the old Panasonic monster of 15 years we handed back! That's progress for you!!
