CNET UK Podcast 164: Can anything save MySpace?

This week, Ian and Nate invited Rory back to the CNET UK Podcast, despite his terrible behaviour and mobile-phone shenanigans last time round. He was very good this time, with his phone causing only very minor interruptions. We discussed the week's news, were pleased to see Microsoft vindicated in the 'black screen of death' scandal, and talked about the future of MySpace.

I couple of comments to what were talked about, but both on the same theme.

News websites that ask me to pay will just make me go elsewhere. Similarly, all Microsoft have achieved with their iPlayer antics is make me think about getting a PS3 (particularly after Nate mentioned streaming media to it).

Maybe whoever reads this will think less of me for saying this. Although there's things I'll pay for and there's things I won't, regardless of how it makes me look.

What are your thoughts?

You used to be able to install Linux on the fat PS3s, but I think they removed that from the slim. It's just as well any way to be honest because you could only install one deviant of linux and it wasn't very good. But the principle was, you could still do it!

Nothing can save MySpace, it's absolutely awful. I just don't know why people other than bands still use it -- it was slow and cluttered and when people messed around with the HTML of their page it made things worse!

I am never going to pay to read things online, I don't care if I used to visit the site religiously in the past. If it happens I'm just going to stop reading news altogether, if it came to that.

News websites charging for stories will never work as long as the BBC is free, thats probably whey the daily mail (if you can call it a news paper) is trying to get rid of them
