CNET UK Podcast 155: Is the Google Wave hype justified?

This week, Ian, Rory and Rich took the good ship podcast on a voyage on the ocean of technology news, circumnavigating the globe of gadgetry. Or something. On the agenda this week were Freeview's re-tune, the launch of Google Wave in a blur of invites and the iPhone coming to Vodafone and Orange. There was also the usual craving, feedback and considerable WTFing over a perversion of the iPod nano.

Hi guys, you asked about any improvements that can made to the podcast? I've been an avid listener since EPISODE ONE (yes, really!) and I love this podcast, but can I make a suggestion about answering emails?

Sometimes you pick ones that are really specific to one person, like so-and-so wants to buy a TV/camera/laptop etc. and they only have a certain amount of money and they have particular situations like they do a lot of gaming but they are on a budget or something. Sometimes I tune out when you get to this bit because in the last 150 episodes or so only about five of these have applied to me at the time of listening!

Maybe you could do a segment like cheap gadget deals that are on in the UK right now, or what's hot in the downloads/software world that everyone should try out?

Just a suggestion, I will still love you guys if you keep that segment anyway!

Hi guys!

About the podcast, I'm just one listener, all the way in Eastern China, following for two years now, but recently kind of stopped listening to the podcast because of the boring (to me) amount of news on Facebook and / or Twitter, sometimes there are no real reviews of gadgets or mid-level mobile phones any more (feels to me) and usually I stop listening when there is a discussion about iPhone or Pre too, or when Nate is on a role and keep speaking over everybody and not let them say what they were saying...
I agree that it feels the focus of your show has moved, and if that is the move the show will go, I will miss getting home from work on a Friday evening, and click on the show, but as you said, things grow and change, so do people, and I'm sure it will appeal to someone else who didn't listen before.

Keep it up, and have fun.

Ok, I have almost been listening for one year now. I have to say in the past weeks the podcast has gotten a little dull, I dont know why but i always find the podcast alot more entertaining when nate is on.... not sure why.

Also i usually skip the bits about facebook but thats as i have never had a facebook and never will. I enjoy everything else though.

Really like the idea of you guys doing like a gadget bargin segment or something.....

Keep up the good work guys xD

This is actually really good feedback guys.

We'll talk about this is in the show today, and perhaps we can adjust some stuff to make the show a little bit more hands-on-tech focused.

I like the podcast, i tryd Engadgets last night, my god it was like 2 hours long. going on about the productivity of having more than one moniter and how you shouldnt do it as you might lose productivity on the go, when you only have one moniter on your laptop. i fell asleep listening, no lie. theres popular techno geekdom and theres being boring. honastly you dont know how good you are until you listen to some of the alternatives. At the end of the day you will never please every one. I find you guys informative and genuinely funny. Keep up the good work.

I think things can get boring because stuff has staggered realises so as geeks we want to no the latest stuff but by the time its relative to the U.K and gets talked about for a second time, most of us have moved on.

P.S do a bit about the zune HD ive got one plus my touch and im loving it. the wifi syncing to update the podcasts, even when its in my jacket in the cubbered under the stairs is awsome.

Also i love the stuff that starts heated debates.

Also can you talk about the nano advert for some reason it has got steam coming out my ears.

Having listened to every single podcast from number one, there certainly has been a big change in the was the podcast is presented.

IMO there are two things that have happened.

1) its become more grown up. For better or worse, CBS influence or otherwise, when people say "dull" i assume them to mean "more sensaible/less outspoken...grown up". I think thats why the person before said they like it when Nate is on. I think Nate is still outspoken, and Ian is still grumpy, but it does seem like there is a producer/lawyer/exec sitting in the corner of the room toning down the name and shame of old

2) I cant really sum the second one up in a few words, but it goes like this. Anybod who reads the tech blog on the BBC website may know what I mean, the BBC is in love with Twitter and cant put it down. Its everywhere, radio, news, tech...EVERYTHING. Its kind of a bit going that way with the podcast, at times it does all get a bit like twitter this and spoitfy that....I think it may be a bit generic at times. I personally would like a bit more in depth technical working detail on some stories and less about what people on twitter think

having said all that, I still listen every week and think its a great podcast. I certainly share your views on the state of UK broadband....but thats a rant for another time

Now I feel little better to see other people feel the same...

I did try the engadget podcast, once....., but I still do get the cnet uk download, and probably will keep at it, even if it is only for Rory's laptop (netbook... what ever its called next) reviews, and to see where you guys go with the show from here.
It would be great to have even more video reviews.... I even used the cnet uk video reviews as part of an educational program we did at school here. (Youtube is currently blocked in PRoC, but there should be short videos on an account under the name "southliving live" if you guys at CBS want to check how young Chinese kids imitate you! Can't remember if the very bad version where I reviewed a SE phone is on there too).

Looking forward to next show (really)...
