I have a laptop (not suitable for gaming) but in my house there is this 5-ish year old desktop which i want to convert into a gaming rig. The desktop is a Dell Dimension 8400: What are the steps required to do improve it?? Thanks for helping this newbie.

Hmm.... when you say gaming do you mean like crysis or like casual gaming? The pc its self isn't that bad but you will want a way better graphics card and possibly a new processor. And you may want to get a new hard drive and do a clean install of the windows 7 RC as over 5 years your computer will have gathered up alot of junk. For a graphics card I would recommend a ATi HD4850 or maybe a Nvidia 9800GT but really the more you pay the better you get so the more money you spend the better. Also for a processor if you want to upgrade I would go for a cheap intel quad core make sure its a socket 775 CPU. Oh and a other important thing check to see if your graphics card slot is a PCI-E or AGP if its AGP your going to be very limited for graphics cards.
