I am looking to start a small business which would entail printing hundreds of greetings cards (including photos) per week. Can anyone recommend a good printer which is fast, reliable and economical?

You need to look at a colour laser machine. They are more expensive but if you go with inkjet it would cost you a lot more on consumables, especially for the quantities your looking at.

Friends have recommended Moo to me, although I have never used them myself

Thanks for that suggestion techblaster - I just had a look at a few on Amazon and was a bit surprised at how much replacement toner cartridges cost (200 pounds). Any idea how long these cartridges tend to last and can you recommend a particular model?

You must have been looking at a really heavy duty machine for the toner to cost so much. Have a look at this one..

the consumables

Also if you shop around you can always get the consumables pretty cheap....

just stick the product code in google shopping and change the prices to low to high.

Thanks for these links techblaster.

My qualms with this printer are that there are no reviews on it to reassure me it would be the right choice. Also other laser printers I have read about have had issues with certain media types creasing or with the quality of the printed photo. The media type specifications for the Brother printer you referred me to highlight only paper/recycled paper (see Amazon) and so I'm hesitant on this one. laser printers certainly do look more economical and hassle free than the inkjets, I have to admit.

If you can convince me otherwise on this particular printer or come across any other suitable looking printers it would be highly appreciated!

It seems the printers beyond entry level prices don't get too many reviews. I did find this one: Xerox Phaser 6280DN
which does print all sorts of media types including greeting cards.

Any thoughts on this one? Would this price range (500 - 600 pounds) be my best bet for reliability or economising long term or would something cheaper do the job just as well?

My screen printing company always give me advice about the printers I should be buying and generally speaking he says all the major names hp, epson, brother and canon will all do quite a good job but for major printing you probably ought to get a decent laser printer of one of the above brands.

Might be an obvious point but why not just ask your local print shop to do it?

Perhaps you are not near one. The kodak printers are pretty cheap for big volumes.
