My friend is going to the States and I'm thinking of asking him to get me an iphone since it's cheaper there. Can I activate and use iphone brought in the US in UK?

It's bought not brought. Sorry to be the grammer police. And yes you can 'cos AT&T uses a GSM network like all UK mobile providers. But you'll need to get it unlocked, pretty much any market will have a stall which will do it for you. FYI you won't get visual voicemail this way, not a massive downside, but just to let you know.

You would have to jailbreak it

Yes, and jailbreak software for the 3GS has only just come out and is quite unstable. iPhone 3G jailbreak software for 3.0 is pretty well-rooted now and you shouldn't have any problems. It is also worthy of noting that iTunes updates or iPhone firmware updates will most likely "brick" your iPhone (as in, you won't be able to use it until you fully restore the device). You'd lose all your data in this scenario, but iTunes backs up your data before every sync and upgrade. You'd lose all your Music and Video however. Oh, and if you have any hardware problems Apple will not repair the device if you have a jailbroken OS. You'd have to restore the device prior to taking it in for them to look.
