I've always been a firm believer in running my phone battery all the way down before recharging. Do you think this is still necessary with modern phones?

Any other tips for prolonging life?

With regards to the Hero - turn off any automatic data-fetching for things like mail, facebook, twitter.

If you really don't need 3G (as in, if you're not using any internet or VoIP) then turn it off. 3G is such a massive drain on a phone's battery, it's pretty ridiculous.

Turn the brightness right down as well and turn off any haptic feedback (the thing that makes the phone vibrate a little when you press something)

Other than that there's not much you can do! Hope that helps a little though.
