Hi

I am looking for a low cost / relatively decent quality laptop of similar dimensions to the larger netbooks (e.g. MSI Wind/Advent 4211, Lenovo IdeaPad S10, Packard Bell Easy Note BG45-U-300). The problem is I also need a CD/DVD drive.

The screen needs to be in the range of c. 10-13 inches. Performance does not need to be particularly strong - it will mostly be used for web and MS Office work. I would not want to spend more than £450 (i.e. a Toshiba Satellite U300 is £500+)

If you have any suggestions I would be very grateful.

Many thanks

Rob

The Dell Vostro 1400 sells for £233 and has a DVD Drive for you. The only 'problem' is that the screen is 14 inches, so it probbly isn't as portable as you'd like. But for £233 it comes across as a bit of a bargain to me.

I'm not too big on the whole Netbook/Eee PC thing though, so i'm sure that someone else will probably be able to fill you in better than I have.

Edit: You could also give the Advent 9515 a go. According to the review its battery life sucks and it's not that great for gaming. But it's a bit more powerful than the Dell Vostro that I mentioned earlier (2GHz processor and 2GB of RAM). The hard drive is also bigger - at 160GB. This seems to come at the cost of portability however as it's heavier (Just under 3KG) and larger with a 15.4 inch screen. It still has that DVD Drive that you need though.

Contrary to what everyone thinks, there is a Netbook with an internal DVDRW drive. Although you will have to probably import it from Japan.

I give you, the Kohjinsha SX3

If you can't get that the only alternative I can think of is getting a Netbook and then buying an external DVD drive to carry around with you. Although to be honest that would probably just wind up being bulkier than a regular laptop.

Although you can get a very slim bus powered DVD+/-RW/RAM drive by LG. £50 at Dabs.com.

I guess I deserve to be called an oxymoron.
I bought an Acer aspire one netbook and discovered 3 weeks later that it does not have a DVD drive. I was hoping to watch movies during my frequent train travels. Should I return it (John Lewis will deduct 15% of the cost because i opened it) or buy an external multidrive? Acer sells one for £65, but there many compatible ones in the market for half the price. Which should I chose?

Someone else asked me about this before, and you have to consider how often you really need to use a dvd drive? If your getting a netbook running linux then most of the applications are available online. If your running Windows then you install applications once! If you want to watch dvd's etc then you know in advance if you are going to watch one! Depending on the netbook and the size of your music collection, I would assume its unlikely you will store all of your music on their either.

It may seem more practical to get a netbook with a dvd drive but it will severely limit your choices!
