I have been keeping an eye on the UMPC market waiting for the right moment to buy something like an EEEPC. Every model seems to have a different processor with a new updated model to be released in coming months. Off the top of my head I can name the following Intel 'brands': Centrino Silverthorne Atom Penryn Pentium M Core 2 Duo and am now completely confused by what each will do, how they rank in performance and which are current/upcoming!

It is extremely confusing, you're right. Here's a quick breakdown. Centrino: A brand of laptops optimised for wireless and long battery life. That's pretty much every Intel laptop nowadays. Silverthorne: Intel's internal codename for the Atom brand of CPUs Atom: A new series of low-power chips designed for use in ultra-portable machines. Set for release later this year, they're said to provide long battery life and modest processing power and will likely feature in future revisions of the Eee PC, HP 2133 etc. Penryn: Intel's internal codename for the current generation of Core 2 Duo CPUs, as found in Centrino laptops. Previous generation Core 2 Duos were codenamed Santa Rosa. The next gen will be known as Nehalem. Pentium M: A range of single-core laptop CPUs -- found usually in older laptops, or new budget laptops like the current Eee PC 701. Core 2 Duo: A range of dual-core laptop (and desktop) CPUs. More modern than the single-core Pentium M. Hope that makes sense.
