Hey, we've just published our full Asus Eee PC 900 review - we liked it a lot, and thought it was a significant improvement on the old one, even if it is creeping up towards normal laptop prices.

We also did a photo story comparing the 900 with the 701.

What do you think? Do you prefer the smaller, cheaper version, or would you opt for something more powerful?

It's a bit disappointing - lower resolution and smaller keyboard than the HP Mini while only being slightly smaller in size. I know the processor in the HP Mini is bad but a 900MHz celeron isn't exactly better.

I think I'll hold out on buying a laptop of this range until after June when the other EeePC rivals like the MSI wind etc. come out and when the Atom processors options will become available.

I thought the whole point of it was that it's cheap - otherwise you might as well just buy a proper laptop if you can afford one.

Regarding the Eee, I have a couple of question...

What is the maximum output resolution of the VGA port?

Will I be able to get it to Full HD? wink

Even if it can do Full HD it might struggle to play anything at the resolution without dropping frames. It's still a cheap machine, remember.

I was going to start my own Asus Eee 900 thread but remembered this was here, so I won't duplicate.

For all of us after getting an Eee 900, lets all post up the places we've seen it available for pre-order, so we can all help each other find the best deals!

Play.com are saying they'll have them soon for £329, see here.

However, I'd avoid Expansys.com, as they're quoting £370. White Linux, Black Linux, Black XP.

I just spoke with Asus this morning and they're thinking of removing the "Asus" branding from the Eee PC, so from now on it would only be known as the "Eee PC".

They reckon people won't want to buy their more expensive laptops once they realise it's possible to make them for a lot less money.

What do you guys think. Should Asus leave its name on Eee machines?

I think they should leave their name on - the Eee PC is an exercise in low-cost and ultra-portability, so having the Asus name shows that Asus are providing a range of, ah, mobile computing solutions, not that they are gouging people on their more expensive laptops.

I've been doing a bit of research into how ot get mobile broadband on an Eee without needing to have XP installed.

Vodafone Mobile Connect Card driver for Linux (Wikipedia)

What I don't know is if any of those devices listed include the USB stick type modems that Vodafone are currently selling. The only mobile modem I do know at the moment is the soap-on-a-rope style Huawei E220.
