I have loads of 720p/1080p MKV files and hundreds of AVI files encoded in xVid. I also have ripped some of my dvds into ISO to archive them. I want to play these on my Sony Bravia TV in HD. I assume that the Popcorn hour is the best choice to achieve this. I cannot find a UK supplier apart from Amazon UK. What is the best and cheapest way to get my hands on a popcorn hour? Or should i just build a HTPC?

Thanks

I found a bunch of places here that sell the Popcorn Hour A-110. The lowest price there seems to be around £190-ish.

A HTPC will be more versatile, and would be able to do, well, what a regular computer does really. It depends if you need all of those extra features or not though. If you just want to stream media across your network, then get the Popcorn hour, if you want to do things like surfing the Internet then get a HTPC.

I can't come up with a good list of HTPCs from the top of my head, but I understand that the Dell Studio Hybrid is claimed to be suitable for a home theatre, although by the looks of things you might benefit from putting a graphics card inside it, as it uses Intel Integrated graphics, which are, well, not ideal for HD Content.

Getting a HTPC looks like a more expensive route to take, and if all you want to do is stream media to your TV then I would personally get the Popcorn Hour.

Popcorn Hours are imported by Advanced MP3 Players, who I recommend highly.

It's rare to get ALAC support. That said, Sonos and Squeezebox both support ALAC. Though obviously no video!!
