I want to buy an MP3 player mainly to use through my audio system in my car. I'm never had one before and am not sure which one to get - don't want to buy an iPod just for the sake of it. Require ability to have playlists, albums etc, easy to initially set up inc easy transferance of all current CDs from my windows media player to MP3, clear instructions to follow, easy to use, good volume levels. Would like to be able to download easily from internet. Am not bothered about video playback, taking photos etc - just want to listen to the music up to 2000 tracks is fine, budget up to iPod nano of about 110. Have seen the sony walkman NWZ-e436f for about 65 - any good or better than Nano as its cheaper?

does your car have a USB pen slot to put a memory stick into? because if so you could buy a 16GB memory pen for about £20 and stick a load of music onto that.

No it doesn't. My cd player is a 6 stacker that has broken and beyond repair so would have to replace the whole unit inc radio etc with a single cd player plus radio. What I want to do is buy mp3 player to plug into current cassette player (which is part of unit).

Can I ask the make, model and year of the car as their may be a solution specifically for your car? Also the make and model of the head unit?

Fusion make a head unit into which you insert an IPod; the Sony Ericsson W980 and Nokia N85 mobile phones both have built in FM transmitters so you can play them through the car stereo; Dension make IPod links; you can get an FM transmitter that will work with any MP3 Player.

So for your budget, how about a Creative Zen 8GB with a Griffin ITrip Auto Universal or an IPod Nano 8GB with a Griffin FM transmitter.

Thanks for your response. Have got the iPod Nano 8G with the intention of getting the car cassette adaptor for the car.

Thank you.

My pleasure, what this 'cassette' thing of which you speak? wink

I haven't used a cassette adaptor since my Walkman Proffessional and a 71 Chevy I had during a spell in California about 20 years ago, so I don't know how well they perform. I do remember that the tape heads get covered in crud which degrades their performance somewhat. Maplin sell a cassette head cleaner and demagnetizer for £3.29 which may be worth trying if you think it's worth it or if the sound quality isn't up to your expectations.

The cassette adaptor plugs into your iPod and goes into the cassette player on your car, obviously if you have one which I do, so that the iPod plays through your speakers that way. Having read a number of reviews through various webisites (inc iWorld) it's supposed to give better sound than going through the radio. My car system has a cassette, 6 stacker CD (now broken) and radio in one system which is why I decided to do it. Worth a go as it only cost £1.99 instead of up to £30 for the FM transmitter. Thanks for the advice re a cleaner - hadn't thought of that.
