Hello experts,

I'm looking for my first DSLR.. finally getting out of the shell.. although I personally feel nothing like a slim (and powerful) P&S.

Although my first one, I want something which wont get out dated in a couple of years !
I have shortlisted to Nikon D90 and Canon EOS500 but still very open to other suggestions.

I'll mainly be using it for holiday pics may be family occasions/functions.. etc.
But I do want the one which could take HD videos. (also are there other cheaper models by Canon / Nikon which may be better value for money?)

What do people suggest, personally I think very highly of Nikon as a brand, but have heard that off-lately canon is making the best DSLRs.
also what are peoples' thoughts on other makes like Pentax, Panasonic, Sony, Olympus and others? I did notice some of these with pretty high review rating on the website?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Get either a Canon or a Nikon. A key deciding factor should be 'do any of my mates have lenses for this SLR system that they would let me borrow?'.

Canon lenses are generally cheaper than Nikon lenses and you end up spending more on lenses than the camera. Or at least you do if you get into it.

I'm still using my EOS 20D and love it. I'd upgrade to the 5D in a flash if I had the money. Actually, I'd upgrade to the 1DS MkII if I had the money. Cameras don't really go out of date as such, but better ones come out. I'd love the extra cropping I could do with double the resolution, but I can print A0 from an uncropped shot and that is enough.
