What Standard Definition camcorder to buy?

Hi guys,

I want to buy a HDD standard definition camcorder with microphone jack. I would prefer if it had greater optical zoom (> 20) and at least average video quality. What would you recommend? My price range is 400-500 pounds This would be my first camcorder and I am really confused by the abundance of models offered.
